ARGE Buhnenbau Otterndorf

Groyne construction Cuxhaven Otterndorf

We built 24 groynes in the Otterndorf bank area for WSA Cuxhaven. The order volume for this project amounted to Euro 33 million. The project was carried out by a joint venture.

The following construction companies participated in the Buhnenbau Otterndorf JV:

  • Heinrich Hirdes GmbH
  • Colcrete-von Essen GmbH & Co. KG
  • Bunte GmbH & Co. KG
  • Van den Herik GmbH

Heinrich Hirdes GmbH assumed the technical management, and Colcrete-von Essen GmbH & Co. KG the commercial management for the construction project.

WSA Cuxhaven planned an execution period of 3 years for this project. Thanks to the concentrated use of technical machinery and the optimisation of the construction processes, we succeeded in reducing the execution period of the project to 2 years.

The condition of the ground for constructing the groynes was not sufficiently filter stable, it was therefore necessary to improve the stability of the ground. Approximately 200,000 m² of sink pieces were installed and then covered with armour stones in order to achieve filter stability.

Installing the sink mats

The armour stones were supplied from a Norwegian quarry to Cuxhaven berth 9 by self-unloading sea-going vessels, temporarily stored and loaded there into barges for the construction project. Approx. 600,000 tonnes of armour stone were used for the groynes in Otterndorf.

Working at low water

One particular challenge was working transverse to the tidal current. In addition, the construction vehicles and the materials used in the construction were exposed to the waves and swell of the passing sea-going vessels.
