Barth Pier (second construction section)

The Barth Pier was one of the third-largest coastal protection measures in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the construction costs amounted to Euro 12.2 million. The client for the construction was the Town of Barth. The pier construction was erected in two sections. In the first construction section the west pier was built with a length of 657 m (2005 - 2006).

The second section included the construction of the west pier head, the east pier and the expansion of the industrial harbour. The total length of the second pier section amounted to 325 m and was completed in 2012.

The pier was built by the Hafenmole Barth joint venture. The technical management of the construction work was provided by Heinrich Hirdes GmbH.

The members of the joint venture for the second section were:

  • Heinrich Hirdes GmbH
  • Josef Möbius Bau-GmbH
  • Colcrete-von Essen GmbH & Co. KG
  • BB-Barth GmbH

To construct the western pier head, non-supporting ground (sludge, mud, peat) had to be dredged. The ground conditions were improved by adding a sand-gravel mix. The sand-gravel mix used for this was obtained from the maintenance dredging of the Kinnbackenhagener channel.

The harbour to the south of the west pier was deepened to -3.20 mean sea level.
