Boskalis Hirdes successfully completed a coastal protection project for the German Waterways and Shipping Office WSA Weser-Jade-Nordsee. With a price tag of €17,5 million, this multifaceted project was aimed at upgrading the existing coastal defense on the island of Wangerooge in order to provide flood protection to the island’s residents.
Executed with a local German partner Johann Bunte Bauunternehmung GmbH, the project commenced in September 2020 and was completed in November 2021. The grouting works were subcontracted to Hülskens Wasserbau and Mibau Deutschland GmbH was in charge of the rock delivery as a main supplier.
The scope of the project included, first of all, the modification and extension of existing jetty for logistical purposes. This effort included the delivery of 90,000 tons of rock.
Unexploded ordnance (UXO) identification and removal was part of this effort, along with the installation of sheet piles including anchoring with steel capping beam. Total of 23,000m³ dredging works was performed.
Second, Boskalis Hirdes built an access/construction road with a length of 1,074 metres. This required the excavation and removal of 9,500m³ of soil, as well as the installation of 21,200m³ of filter material and rocks (including grouting).
Third part of the Wangerooge project concentrated on the core of coastal protection work itself. This required extensive dredging and dumping (21,500m³ of soil) and demolition and removal of existing revetment for later re-use. Furthermore, geotextile was installed along with 160,000 tons of filter material and rocks (both purchased and recycled material).
Finally, this third phase included 17,750m² of rock grouting and the installation of access roads (asphalt concrete), including kerb stones.
Per Boskalis’ strategy, the company deals with challenges caused by the current climate crisis. The project on the island of Wangerooge was aimed at combatting the consequences of extreme weather related to climate change.
